What is an IP address?

An Internet Protocol, IP is a unique identifier for a computer or system that is linked to a network or the internet. The IP address is the unique identifier that is assigned to a system's network adaptor.

An IP address can be translated to a domain name by a domain name server (DNS). A DNS, also known as a nameserver, is a server that contains a list of ip addresses and their related domain names. This provides the domain name and server ip address mapping which allows domain names to resolve and the user to be directed to the correct server.

Static IP addresses are IP addresses that are fixed to a specific system. This is a non-changing IP address. Static IP addresses are common for servers as this IP address will be used in conjunction with a nameserver to provide a valid domain name for the specific server.

Not all IP addresses are static addresses. Depending on the type of connection a system might have a Dynamic IP address. A Dynamic IP address is a temporarily assigned IP address, assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) computer which grabs the address from a pool of IP addresses. Dynamic IP addresses are common in personal computer networks.

IPv4 is a four byte, 32 bit IP address in the form 255.255.255.255. IPv4 is the current network standard.

IPv6 is the successor to IPv4 which is beginning to be deployed. IPv6 is a 128 bit IP address. IPv6 addresses are normally written as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits. For example, 2002:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7445 is a valid IPv6 address.
